Chances for BB IBD

Hi guys,

Please help me out here by giving me your opinion on what I should do. Thank you so much for your help - I genuinely appreciate it.

1) I interned with GS (Asset Management) this summer (sophomore year summer). Now, I'm looking at other options for my junior year internship. The HR people are going to call me in the next week to discuss my junior year internship with me. I don't know what they'll offer me but from what I know, they'll probably offer me GSAM again or ask me to interview for other divisions. What, in your opinion, should I do? Should I stick to GSAM and take the offer if they give me or should I explore other options given the job market we're in today.

2) What do you think my chances of landing with a BB IBD internship are? My GPA is 3.61 (messed up one course really badly) and I've GS experience on my resume, besides other internships, co-curricular activities and one extremely impressive community service.

3) Also, to be frank, I'm in an extremely tight financial position. I really need the money of my next year's internship if I've to continue with college and be able to graduate (yes, it's THAT bad). On one hand, I want to take the risk of trying out other/better things that have more exit options and on the other, I don't want to risk losing out on this opportunity of getting the internship money and keeping this secured offer.

Please share what you think I should do.

Thank you.

Hi guys,

Thank you for replying. Sorry for the delay, I was traveling.

@Gekko_KKR: They open Sophomore positions every year though there are only a few.

@Meezy: I was in TPD/Institutional Sales at GSAM. Nopes, I am not one of those GS-is-the-end-all-and-be-all-of-life. I'm open to working in any financial institution. As for the division, I'm really open to anything within IBanking. I am even open to Sales and Trading, I'm just going to try out things. But indeed, my preference is IBD because of the wealth of exit options available. I'm actually in Asia, hence the concept of a target school doesn't apply. But I go to a top business school in Asia.

Let me know what you all think.

At the end of the day, you have to have the appearance and the personality to get a job. Generally speaking, the work in finance is trainable. The game breaker is your looks. In the world of finance you need to be smart enough to do the job and most important look the part.

looks can have an impact (especially if you are a girl), but you need to be qualified to get a chance to be looked. While having a suit that fits well and combed hair does help, it won't help if you don't know how to do a DCF during an interview
