Corporate Fin. Low life

This scenario actually took place about two weeks ago in a corp. fin. class. The professor asked what a 'proxy' was..and this is what ensued:

1st girl called on: "I don't know" (probably the smartest answer up until I spoke 4th).

2nd guy called on: "it is an approximation" (fucking moron).

3rd guy called on: "a temporary number" (equally useless response).

Thoughts? I was quite frankly too disgusted to laugh at the time, but it is quite amusing.

If you knew it all moron why did you attend the class?

Your classmate are learning. I can't wait to interview brats like you @#$%!

Hmm, you misunderstand my intentions. The question was asked in reference to a proxy in general (unrelated to finance). I cannot believe someone thought a proxy was short for 'an approximation'. I do not nearly profess to know it all, nor am I a brat (far from it), but I am bright enough not to volunteer information that I do not know. This story is only justification for a stronger english & literature requirement for undergrad students.

that I've heard proxy used correctly as approximation, i.e. that number proxies another as an estimation. but maybe its just a stretch of formal definition.
