DE Shaw Investor Relations

DE Shaw are always advertising for Investor Relations roles (Associate). Does anyone know what the exit ops would be for a role like this? It's a great firm but I'm assuming that this would really only lead to a marketing / sales role down the line.

Does anyone know what kind of people they hire? Job description seems kind of vague. Also, does anyone know what the salary / total comp would be like?

So Investor Relations is a weird bucket to be in, however you can make some decent moves in there with hard work and serious luck. IR is basically "Equity research for one company".

Basically your goal would be to slip from Investor Relations there to an Investor Relations position somewhere in a major company (IBM, Coca Cola, Johnson and Johnson...).

It would be in your interest to move to a larger corp division though because you could make some interesting transitions:

  1. Could be to corp dev at the company like IBM/Coke etc.
  2. Flip to research where you know one company very well therefore would be great for covering your competitors.

The problem with IR at a place like DE shaw.. should be relatively obvious which is that it is not publicly traded. This is significant because a traded company you can take more credit for doing stuff like presentations at conferences, running financial statements/presentations for the company's SEC filings. etc.

Anyway that's the jist. In terms of pay its a WIDE scale. Some Head of IR's at top firms will make as much as a sell-side analyst makes (yeah a lot), of course the lower you are the less relevant so not sure how to answer your question on the low end for a non-traded company. Never worked there so again will avoid misinformation. Good luck!

WSPlayboys is wrong from top to bottom on this. IR at a hedge fund is fundraising and maintenance. High payout for money raised and relationships covered. Top producers in this role can make tens of $millions PER YEAR. Go for it if that's what you're after IR is a good path and even if you don't end up staying in that area you will have chances to move into other parts of the business. Yes, including investment strategy and trading. Good luck.

Thanks, my understanding was that IR at DE Shaw would be more like a sales / marketing role than an IR role at a corporate.

What would the exit ops be for someone looking to stay in the hedge fund business?

Judging by your name (Dave), IR may not be for you: http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2010/07/investor_relations_hotties…

FYI -- It is sales/marketing for a hedge fund. Exit opps are IR at other funds or set up shop as a third party marketer.
