How are sell-side economic research groups (macro research) viewed? What exit ops are there (most likely to HFs), but anything else?

Curious about this as well. Do these groups only hire Econ Phd or masters? Or can you get into them via mba or policy programs?
Regarding exit opps, I imagine that macro hedge funds and Fed/IMF/World Bank/think tanks are all viable options.
Are these groups extremely quantitative/held high in regard? What are hours/pay like?
