Equity Strategy vs Equity Research

Hey guys,

I have an interview for an Equity Strategy and an Equity Research position (both by the same MD) for a particular BB.

I was wondering what exactly an Eq. Strategy desk does vis a vis an ER desk.

Pros and cons of Eq. Strat. vs E.Research would be great!

Thanks!

It's hard to say without knowing the particular bank. Generally, however, Equity Strategy is the work done to support anything from prop trading to more specialized industry stock trading desks. It is seen as a "support" for the sales and trading side.

ER tends to define the research reports that BBs use to sell advice / reports to clients (institutional, private, etc).

Though at GS, the ER team also supports the highly coveted prop trading desks - so it all depends on the bank.
