Generalists - Research Process

Generalists of WSO - what is your research process? How do you go about turning your attention from one industry to another on a daily basis? What are your go to methods for getting caught up with a certain industry or sector? Are you delving into industry primers, talking to sell-side analysts, industry contacts ... other? Which of these tools proves the most fruitful and meaningful to you?

As a generalist what percentage of your ideas are self sourced vs. your PM asking you to look into a certain theme he or she believes will play out over some time horizon, or a sector recently fallen out of favor which may be ripe for picking? Are you involved with the investment committee meetings where these themes are developed and constantly monitored?

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.
