Grad Recruitment Upset?
I had an interview with a bank scheduled for today (for SA) and I cancelled it this morning because I decided to take the offer from another company. The recruiter sounded upset in the email (tried calling but couldnt get through) because I cancelled so late.
The problem is, I worked for this bank in my sophomore year and will need a reference from them for the new SA position when the background check is done. Could my reference be affected by the recruiter? Do the HR teams communicate (reference-givers and recruitment)?
It's fine, the only reference that they need to provide is to confirm that you worked there for the dates that you said you did, and they won't screw you over on that. Grats on the offer!
Thanks. Hope thats the case
You have a zero percent chance of being hurt, all they are going to do is confirm if you worked there since you have the offer in hand already.
More importantly the bigger takeaway you should make is this. If you worked for them before and then had another interview with the same firm, just show up and interview if its within 24 hours. The reason why is because you'll at least save face. They are more upset that you're leaving them hanging out to dry, next time a situation like this turns up just show up and don't take the offer.
They can't fill the spot for the interview over night.
If you never worked for them, what you did would be much more okay.
I thought it would be worse to go to interview with no intention of taking the job (since I accepted another offer). That would be more of a waste of their time I think. And it would be offensive to the firm who I will be working for.
I think you should be okay because they'll just confirm that you actually worked there, but (as you seem to realize) you should try to be more careful next time... never a good idea to leave someone with a bad feeling when it's not necessary.
Yeah I see where your head was at... Would take a step back and view from the other side of the table. That's usually the best way to do it.
So as you can see in the second bullet, once they believe you are showing up... it won't hurt as bad to show up then just turn it down. The original firm, the one you already accepted, would not even know about it. They are not going to send spies in there or anything.
General rule of thumb... If you can give them 48hrs+ to get a new person in there go ahead and cancel. Once that window closes show up if you worked with them before. If you never worked with them and its unrelated then feel free to cancel.
Hope that helps, either way congrats.
Thank you very much, I'll keep that advice in mind for the future.
But for the present, there is no issue right? Does the recruiter even have the power to influence my reference? I mean, i didn't work for her...
Im just being paranoid here, but if the firm at which I have accepted an offer gets a bad reference, what happens? (For an SA specifically). Do I get a chance to refute, etc.?
You guys are hilarious! Posted above in quotes.

So nooooo way my man go have fun majoring in whiskey and skirt chasing.
Finally, now that you are relaxed time to mess with you.
A bank's interest in their summer analyst is right up their with their interest in what type of windex is used by the janitor. Zero.
Get in there are work like a dog, get an offer and you'll be good 2 go.
