GRE Trouble - A Risky Idea

I was due to take my GRE test tomorrow. And I was incredibly confident. However, I did the powerprep one more time beforehand and I got an awful score of Q450 V500!

I couldnt believe it. The CAT scores on Kaplan I was getting 770Q 540V. So Verbal was fine but Quant was a huge drop. So I decided to postpone it.

Here's my situation. I have made applications to Duke MMS, Vanderbilt MSF in their last rounds. I havent told my GRE score yet.

Would you think its OK to tell them a score, reasonable of course, to ensure my application continues ahead within time and then when I take it again, I'll get ETS to issue them with the official certificate.

What do you guys think? I realise its risky but I know I'm a solid student. I cant let a stupid entry exam ruin my chances at graduate school.

My background is Econ major 3.8GPA, GWU, great recs

agree with shorttheworld, don't make up a score. Even if your official score comes in higher than your reported score, they are going to look for an official score that matches your reported one. If the two don't match -- you may need to answer some questions. Imagine if lying kept you out when you would have normally been accepted? I don't think I could live with that.

Lastly -- you're not the one who determines if you're qualified for the school -- they are. It can suck (trust me, I've been there), but that's just the way it works.

Thanks a lot for your feedback. I'm still undecided. On the one hand, I would tell them a score that I know, realistically I can get, obviiously no certanties. Most of the unis I have applied require self reported scores and confirmation on admission only. If I am rejected anyway, no harm done.

Can those who said it is a good idea elaborate a bit?

You were serious? I thought you were certainly a troll. This is a TERRIBLE idea - you will need to get that EXACT score on the test - not likely. Otherwise they will see that you told them a score other than the one you got, and also reported it before you took the test, and they would be likely to pull an offer of admission, if one had been made by that point.

Dude, wow, I was being facetious, obviously I didnt do a good job. Lemme say: This is a HORRENDOUS idea. You know that disclaimer form you have to sign that indicates everything you mention in your app is the truth, funnily enough it actually means something.

I know a guy who applied at Cambridge for the MPhil in Management and sent in the app for the deadline without a score. He was to take the GMAT later but told them a score. He however said that he told them he was going to take it again so would they be willing to take the current score for consideration until he retakes the test. Shockingly they did not agree.

Stupid ideas aside, try telling them that you have sent in a score and whether they have received it or not. Buys you some time I guess. Post how it goes and what you decide.

I just had another idea. If you're adamant to tell them a score, tell them one but then when they want to corroborate it, tell them it expired, as it went past the 5 years already. Then they likely will accept your new score.

There two ideas. Not great but certainly better than what you're thinking.

I think I am gonna tell them the fake score. I will spin it somehow. I cant let this opportunity pass.

Thanks all for your input except for the morons who riduclued me.

celtic you are so dumb, a fake score? How can you control this.. you are going to count the number of question to get right and wrong? and then what if you score under what you told them?

The answer to your question is 1) network 2) get involved 3) beef up your resume 4) repeat -happypantsmcgee WSO is not your personal search function.
