Help evaluate AM job offer!
Hi all,
I currently work for a financial software company as a software dev making about $115k/yr with a tiny ~3% bonus.
I got a job offer from a growing small quant equity Asset Management company. The offer is for $95k with a potential bonus of $15-20k/yr.
Is this a reasonable offer for a highly quantitative person with a lot of programming experience? Also, would it be worth taking this (small) pay cut in order to get FO experience at a fund?
Please let me know your thoughts. This forum has a lot of great insight.
The salary in your offer is about right but the bonus range should be 5x what they quoted you. Recommend decline.
Do you know what 'level' you'd be coming in at? And what would be your role exactly? From first glance it seems worth it if you want to move into finance, but the previous two questions are important (particularly the second).
I believe you can find a position paying more than current base.. If you shop around. Patiently.
I wouldnt take the cut. We're not talking about getting rocket science exposure here and neither are the stakes that high at these pay levels.
They may simply be leveraging your desire for FO.. And be careful about bait and switch. Why do you say this is FO? (Are you still going to be coding?)
Personally, it would be worth the paycut to me to get the FO experience. You can always bounce around. And if you do a great job there is potential for more $$. Best of luck and congrats!
i don't mean to burst your bubble but based on the pay level and structure, it doesn't seem like your offered position is considered FO work. that said, there are opportunities to make significantly more in such positions (coding for quant shops or banks).
Exactly. In my previous post I also stated:
"They may simply be leveraging your desire for FO.. And be careful about bait and switch. Why do you say this is FO? (Are you still going to be coding?)"
I agree with the skepticism; ask point blank if you are under the firm's CTO or COO. If he is between you and the company's chief investment guy on the org chart, pass immediately.
That said, why finance? If I were you, I would take that skillset and apply to startups for analytics/data science roles.
