Help with IBD Internship Decision
Hey everyone,
I just received an IB internship offer with Keybank capital markets (KBCM) for next summer. I have to respond very soon so I will not have the opportunity to try for other banks. I have a very good GPA (near perfect) and had a solid internship last summer so I would be confident if I declined.
Key seems very solid and there are opportunities in NY and west coast. They are a pretty well respected MM bank especially after the acquisition of Pacific Crest. I feel like it would be a good place to start and make a name for myself. Not really thinking about exit opps into PE or anything. Just want some opinions on whether I should accept or take a chance, and the bank in general. Thanks
Not worth it. You could do absolutely nothing this summer and get an FT offer from Key next year if you really wanted to work there.
So turn it down? Would being placed in NY or SF make a difference?
I'm inclined to agree with Trade_timmy. I think it's a 3rd tier shop, so you could pivot pretty much any internship into interviews, etc.
On the other hand, I'm very against choosing based on prestige, so if you actually like people / culture there, you should consider.
Damn, I just find it hard to actually turn down an offer like that :(
If you want to work there and don't have interest/confidence in getting an offer at a bigger/better bank, then accept it. Definitely don't accept it just because you have the offer though.
For what it's worth 2 people (maybe it was just 1, don't really remember) in my training class interned at Key and were able to switch to a more well-known MM shop for FT.
Honestly it depends on your recruiting opportunities and your school
Almost all recruiting is done through our own networking. I slacked on the networking because I became complacent with the offer. I would have to start going hard now if I decide to decline.
