How do you network when employers know what you're up to?
Hey guys,
So networking is definitely a major factor in the recruitment process, but after reading guides and articles about the "proper" way to network, the entire process seems both forced and a turn-off (in my view) for employers. The basic guideline is to differentiate yourself at networking events by asking specific questions (perhaps geared towards them), somehow connect with them, and then follow-up by writing a thank you email attached with 2-3 topics you discussed with the employers.
Following these known steps, I would suspect that employers know you're essentially trying to "use" them to break into their company. So how could you actually converse effectively with an employer, when the employer assumes the above about you? What would be the best way to network with them? Should you just speak only about topics geared towards the job, or actually try to learn more about them (although this may have some kickbacks since they may assume your schmoozing than rather than being genuinely interested).

we all lie to everyone's face on daily basis and the recipient of the lies knows that he/she is getting lied to but pretends he/she doesn't. it's just how things work.
You can "actually converse" by not being socially inept and finding some commonalities to talk about . They know you're using them but they won't hold it against you (if you come off as genuinely interested and likeable) since they likely broke in using the same techniques.
Also, it helps to get them to talk about their experiences in the industry/their story (everyone likes to talk about themselves).
i sent someone an email in private bank and he replied that he networked to get where he is and that i was obviously off to a good start doing what i was doing......what does that say?
It doesn't matter if it's contrived or blatantly transparent. The fact of the matter is that MOST kids do not network for any type of job. Even the kids who apply for the elite careers on Wall St. -- most of them don't network.
So even though you send someone a stupid email and all that shit, it still shows that you care enough to send it.
If you're socially suave enough to connect with employers and come off as likable, that's a huge plus and will help you immensely.
Networking does three things:
1) It keeps your face (name) out there! 2) It shows how much you want the job - if your name keeps showing up 3) It's a first sign of you being able to seek clients - good networking is a sign of good social skills.
So get at it...it might seem fake, but there is a reason and usefulness to it.
