I was told i am too young for role

Hi All

So work in Corporate Strategy in a Multinational, I have been here for close to a year. Prior to a that I worked as a investment banking analyst for over a year. I am interviewing for a private equity/Project Finance role. I have been through all the interviews; technical, modelling test. Met with directors (and even the CEO). They all seemed to be impressed and expressed interest in working with me. I was told another partner would meet up to discuss salary only for to call and say everybody is happy with you but you are too young, we want to keep this open for another junior role we would open up in future.

I am really upset, I feel like my time is wasted having gone through all this only to hear I am young.

Question is what's your take on all this? Are they ditching me? And in recruiting do you look for one has the longest experience or the one who can do the job?

This is discrimination!! Take them to court and get millions....jokes. Its unlucky and you should look at the job description and check if they listed for an experienced employee, if not then you have the right to ask them why they wasted your time.

Absolute truths don't exist... celebrated opinions do.

They knew your background and that you only have two years of experience - I'm a little surprised they didn't weed you out during the initial resume reviews. I'm also a little surprised they said "too young" since age discrimination only applies over 40 but you really shouldn't be referencing age at all. Preferring a seasoned candidate on the other hand is totally reasonable - especially if they won't have the time or resources to hire and train one right now.

If they said they are keeping you in mind for junior roles, they probably will. They might even be hoping that when they find the seasoned candidate, that person can grow into a role with a direct report. My criticism of them though is that they should have been more clear about level-setting expectations if they were going to run your through the process.

Lately I've been doing some work with PE firms and I've noticed that they definitely prefer more seasoned candidates, even at junior levels. It's one of the industries that you don't really "age out of" but have to be a wunderkind to get in and excel at a young age. Hopefully you do hear from them later, I don't think they'd blow smoke up your ass (it's easy enough to just turn people down) but also wouldn't sit around waiting for some junior role to come around sometime in the future.

Hah - I actually had no idea how employment law treated age discrimination with any detail. It's a protected class but only sometimes and in one direction. Was honestly a bit surprised how far the law lets employers go when evaluating candidates on the basis of age (specifically vs. "experience", which seems like a more accurate and reasonable metric).
