Icing on the Cake

So fellow monkeys, if you knew you were being considered for a position and it was between you and two other individual, would you make any final push to cross the line between hired and rejected?

Background: I come from a state school non-target, and obviously hunting down internships for the summer have been rougher than it needs to be. I have a pretty solid lead on one locally (though nowhere close to what I want to end up doing), but I've also applied to one through some extemporaneous circumstances. We have a pretty active finance club on campus, and we had a speaker from a pretty decent MM PE firm come and talk. After his speech, we chatted for a few minutes and seemed to hit it off okay. Nothing memorable though. Ends up he decided to offer an internship for someone in our club an internship with his firm. A bunch of us submitted resumes about a month ago, and haven't heard since.

A few days ago I talked to the professor who set up the speakership, and said that the guy asked for more info on me and two other people . Suffice it to say, I was thrilled. However, I know the two other people who got shortlisted. They seem to have better academic focus than I do and better finance focused ECs, while I have alot better work experience (not finance though), and more laid back ECs. Because of this, I have been racking my brain on what I could do that might get me that extra "umph" in terms of appeal for the position.

So far I haven't been able to think of anything that would do so without me coming off stupid, or creepy, or an idiot. I already sent him a thank you card (hand written) for coming to speak with us, so another thank you thing would seem over the top. Our school is hundreds of miles from where he works, so meeting with him for coffee or whatnot is out of the question. I almost want to call him and let him know I'm still interested in the position, but I don't want to come off as too needy.

I feel the job is one of those once in a lifetime opportunities that would get me into doing something I want to do as a career, versus ending up being a financial advisor in some podunk town. Any help you guys could throw my way would be great.

You can call him and reiterate why their firm is the perfect fit and you are the hungriest. A lot of people eat that shit up. He probably already has his mind made up, but, if not, maybe this will swing things in your favor.
