Is it unwise for me to focus on improving skills and gaining experience that are directly useful towards an M&A analyst role

I'm a first year student at university......this summer part of my plans include mastering microsoft excel, I bought a CD to help me with this....will also practice mandarin which i took on this year...and do some networking and try to get some unpaid private wealth work experience for whenever i can....(may have to be next year)
