Is physical stamina one of the most important factors in doing well in i-banking?

From personal experience, I find that the amount of sleep I get GREATLY affects everything that I do, from the work that I produce to my interactions with other people. Usually, I feel horrible when I get less than 5 hours of sleep the night before. For others, it seems that sleep doesn't have nearly as big of an influence on their lives.

1. Since sleep deprivation is an evitable part of investment banking life, would you say that one's physical and mental ability to tolerate sleep deprivation is one of the most important factors of how he/she does in i-banking?
2. Do some people decide early on that they simply cannot handle the severe lack of sleep and quit very soon?
3. What happens when you decide your body is really going to break down if you do not get any sleep right away, and you therefore take the rest of the day off even when you have things due that day?

The problem with finance, especially investment banking is uncertainty. Much of the hours you spend in the office during the day might be wasted just surfing the net and proofing some associate work, it's the urgent out of nowhere project that messes up your night. One way to make sure you do good is power naps, keep them basic and short and utilize them throughout the day. Some people have short, others long circadian rhythm. You can taper it down, but at the end of the day, if you can't handle the sleep deprivation, your not cut out for this industry. The stress and deadlines are far worse than sleep deprivation, there are things to help (adderall, modafinil) but you just either have to program your body to run on interrupted random sleep cycles or find something else to do.

u need to lern how to take power naps / invest in pair of noise-cancelling headphones/get white noise apps - all dose help lol

also just be shure to go to sleep asap as opposed to stayin up a few extra hours to watch tv/surf web/other

Assuming you get time to grab lunch, take 15-20 minutes and go relax in a cafe nearby with a sofa. If it's late at night with no one at the office, put your head down like a classroom or go to a meeting room. If it's during the day and your free, resist the urge until later.

you do them in the bathroom stall, then snort a line of cocaine to wake you up at the end

lotsa of firms have rooms designated as "sleeping rooms" , ushuallry empty rooms./offices

Yes, being able to acclimate yourself to the lifestyle is critical to longer-term success in IB. Initially, it was hard to adjust to consistent, minimal sleep; but over time your body adapts. I remember crushing 2 monsters plus coffee each day on 5 hours of sleep - now I can keep sharp on little to no caffeine as long as I have work to do.
