Johns Hopkins Carey Business School...Possible 50% discount?
I have learned that it may be possible for me to gain a 50% discount to attend the JHU Carey Business school once I graduate due to extenuating circumstances. Therefore, it would come out to be about $54,000 total to gain an MBA. Do you guys think that it is worth it? I know that the business school is new and it isn't accredited yet but the Johns Hopkins name carries a lot of weight. I also see it becoming a top business school down the road. I would also likely be able to get my MBA right after graduation which is super difficult with top business schools. Please let me know what you guys think
I have no opinion one way or the other, I was just curious about what makes you believe that Carey will ascend the rankings in the future?
Johns Hopkins is known for having fantastic graduate programs. It's not much of a stretch to believe that once it gains accreditation it will reach the level of it's other programs. Obviously it's impossible to know for a fact and all of this is pure speculation but I personally believe that it will become a very well respected business school down the road. Big money is also being pumped into the school and from what I have heard from recent grads the program seems to be strong
Can anyone weigh in on my original question? It seems like a difficult choice to make whether to pursue that option or not

The straight jump from undergrad to grad doesn't make sense to me, since you'll be surrounded by experienced profoessionals while having nothing to offer. MBA is all about networking and trying to figure out how one can help one another.
You haven't given us any details about your background and future goals. Either way doing an mba right after undergrad is a waste 99% of the time.
I'm a student at Johns Hopkins who is majoring in Psychology (since JHU is a liberal arts school) but interested in finance. Maybe an MSF would be a better choice if I were to attend JHU's Carey Business School? I understand that getting an MBA would probably be a waste right after undergrad (due to networking restrictions) but what do you think about an MSF?
delete..double post
Well what type of job are you hoping for?
Equity Research would be my first choice
What's your full profile? There are carey msf grads working in equity research, however you may be competitive for other msf programs which have better placements.
A $54,000 MBA from JHU with no work experience is a $54,000 waste with or without the discount unless you plan on working for the federal or state government. Agreed that MSF would be a better route. I would think your very best option would be UVA's 1-year MS in Commerce program that is designed especially for non-business grads who decide that they want to go the business route. I would check it out.
I agree w/ DCDepository, based on your profile you could be competitive for other programs.
If you end up doing JHU MSF, go to the Baltimore campus, not DC.
It seems like an MSF would be a good idea given my background. I haven't taken the GMAT or anything but I have ~3.3 GPA. It's not a stellar GPA but JHU's grade deflation is definitely a real thing. Which MSF programs would be good opportunities? I feel like paying half price at JHU may make it a better choice if I couldn't get into other top programs.
Why should I go to the Baltimore campus instead of the DC one? Going to school in Baltimore has made me want to get out ASAP...lol
As a JHU undergrad applying to different grad schools, I do not think admissions councils consider grade deflation here to be a real thing. If you wanted to do Equity Research why didn't you go through recruiting like every other undergraduate here? In my opinion I don't see JHU Carey getting top 20 anytime within the next 10 years. With respect to which MSF programs to target, I'd recommend starting here: http://www.master-of-finance.org/best/affordable-degree-programs/.
@"td12" can anyone weigh in on my questions?
Bump...
Have you been to te baltimore campus yet?
I haven't been inside but I have gone by it
Campuses don't even compare. Wider range of faculty and students to learn from. Dc is almost all part timers
Great. Thanks for the info. Are there any placement statistics about JHU's MSF?
You need to do your own research
apply to msf programs which have the reputation like vanderbilt, claremont, UT austin, villanova etc
you have abetter chance of landing inthe equity research from there rather than doing an mba (even at 50% discount) and the total cost might still be the same, btw UVA - MS commerce is a fantastic choice too
Johns Hopkins b-school is enigmatic. It's high class, but people are confused when you say Johns Hopkins...for business.
Dude, don't go for the Carey MSF program. Carey undergrad alumn here.
