"Just go to a top MBA program"

I know there are many of us on this board who either are currently attending a non-target university, or recieved a degree from a non-target and would love to get a position at an investment bank but simply can't even get an interview. Not to mention that a large portion of analysts would also like to advance to an associate level etc. Many posts on this board seem to just throw out the, "Go to a top MBA program in order to transfer in". However, obviously top programs are extremely competitive to get in. Ignoring the the UG GPA, and GMAT which anyone with some time can score in the respectanle range, how about work experience?

My question being this, how do you analysts manage to differentiate yourselves in order to gain entry into a top program, and what sort of positions/careers do the top schools look highly upon for those of us who didn't attend a target UG school and failed to get an interview?

Are back office positions (operations) regarded as valuable experience? Accounting at Big 4? Some seem to think that joining peace corp is valuable, others don't (not that anyone should even consider PC if its simply a CV booster), but really any ideas? Also, I am looking for positions that someone with an accounting/finance degree would qualify for.

In response to my own stupidity, I now realize the analyst differentiation part of this topic is in another active thread, so please discount that portion of the post.
