"Let me know when you're in town"

I had an interview with a PE firm in my hometown over the phone today...it went okay, not great (though it lasted the full half-hour). At the end of the interview, the guy was like: "Here's the deal. We're small and looking to hire more a couple more people but we don't really have a timeline. Why don't you drop me a line next time you're back here because I'd like to meet you?"

What the hell does that mean?!? I'm not supposed to be back for a couple months but am wondering if I should go back sooner now...

Idk, sounds like they want to meet you in person but don't want to pay for a plane flight so I'd say their interest is... tepid. No one is really going to be able to answer this because of the "small firm" element. Who the fuck knows what those guys are up to? I think it comes down to how badly you want to work for them. If you're pretty happy where you are, why not just keep it in your back pocket and do what they told you to do - let them know when you're in town. If you absolutely positively must flee banking, maybe go home for a weekend. It's your life you know?

I'm not happy where I am and want out ASAP. Just don't like what they're doing by somewhat getting my hopes up and leaving me hanging for potentially a while (and also leaving me to figure out if I should go back home earlier than planned, which was originally Thanksgiving)...buy side opps aren't that plentiful where I'm from and this one seems solid
