Living on the east coast, apply to west coast firms, relocation?
I'm currently living on the east coast but I and not tied this area. I have lots of friends and family on the west coast, In specific SF & SD. I have heard back from a few companies saying something along the lines of me being qualified, but they aren't paying for relocation so they've decided to pursue other candidates. Is that just a cop out or do places really consider current location in looking for candidates to fill open positions? For me to move would cost right around $800 bucks, no big deal, I wouldn't expect them to pay me to move.
Tell them that you are fine with the fact that they are not paying for relocation and emphasize your interest in the firm and how that is more important.
Did you tell them you would pay for your own relocation? It seems like they needed an excuse to weed you out. Why didn't you mention how cheap it would be to the firm earlier? $800 is nothing.
No. I didn't expect they even would. That's why I asked this question because when I heard for the third time I guess it may be an expectation
To be fair, some will if they want you specifically bad enough, but alot of times they won't. The general thing about making that move is that you want to counter any objections they have as quickly as possible. Does the interviewer mention alot of travel? Great! You don't have kids or a spouse. The job is on the west coast? Great! You have family and friends there. Long hours? You leave when the work is done and you don't see that as a problem. You've worked long hours before during X time at your previous job. Etc...
