market hire vs campus hire

i recently talked to a former MD at Citi and he telling me that there are campus hires versus market hires, but i wasnt sure what he meant exactly by that?

could someone clarify?

market hires are laterals.

campus hires are undergrad/grads hired through the recruiting cycle.

no i meant was, assuming you dont get into a formal analyst program, is it possible to be hired onto a specific desk coming from undergrad?
