What type of background check is this, and what does this involve? I'd appreciate anyone with personal experience and specific information.

background checks are pretty standard, they'll just verify that the info on your resume is true (ie. they will confirm employment, grade, etc) and then see if there's anything about you that they didn't know about (ie. criminal record, lawsuits, bankrupcy, etc).
