MM/Boutique B-School Placements

I was wondering how well MM/Boutique banks such as Piper Jaffray and Robert Baird placed into the top b-schools after an analyst stint. I'm thinking specifically Chicago GSB, but input on the others would be appreciated.

Almost all I-banking jobs place well into B-school, working at Piper or Baird would be more of the same. Yes, kids from GS will have greater placement across the board, but there are lots of spots that need to be filled at the top MBA programs, and any i-banking experience is looked upon favorably when compared to 99% of the other careers out there.

Also, top schools really take the time to look into your application. So as long as you have worked on a bunch of deals, and can articulate/show that to them, you will have a good chance regardless of the bank you worked at.

If you are thinking about B-school consider the following....

  • LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION GO A LONG WAY, especially when you are coming from a non-BB bank. This shouldn't deter you from opportunities at boutiques and mm shops, but try to go to a bank that has a lot of MBA grads from the top-schools. There are a lot of good boutiques that generally only hire from the top-schools. They will hopefully write good letters detailing some of the work you did.

  • GMAT is important. I think the scores expire in 5 years. If you are between jobs, or better yet still in school, TAKE THE GMAT! I know studying for a test is the last thing you want to do right before you graduate, but you will have much better study habits and have way more time that you are going to have when you are in the workplace (esp. if in banking).
