the key to fantasy football is high margin players. this mainly depends on how many people are in your league.
for example, there are maybe 3-4 tight ends or 5-6 defenses that can make a big difference. if you can be cheeky about nabbing two in your draft, then not only will you be loaded at a position where the worst positioned team will get nothing from that position, you will also have an embargo on coveted talent. its easy for any team to have a top running back or wide receiver, but to have two top three tight ends? everyone will be offering you great trades.
always get a veteran quarterback with talented wide receivers. they are dependable and likely wont mess up or get hurt, and a qb drafted too high is a waste. after the top three, about the next ten guys are the same. matchups are key here. try and get two comparable guys and play the better matchup.
place a premium on a top notch kicker. you wont be more thankful for this once your kicker drops a twenty-burger. there are like 3, maybe 4, kickers to consider.
running backs are tricky. get one top 10 guy and try and play the waiver wire for your second guy, rely on sleepers, or trade for one who proves himself.
wide receiver is where you spend big money. maybe contrary to popular belief, use a wide receiver as your flex. more options on the waiver wire if you need to add/drop, and running backs are top heavy talent-wise
think backwards (tight ends, defenses) when drafting. this means maybe being the first to draft kickers or defenses. again, play the margin game. but don't be stupid and take a kicker in like the 6th round.
