No pay school year intern in hedge fund

Just wondering under current market condition, what is the best way to find a no pay school year intern in a NY based hedge fund? I'm a first year MBA student with engineering background in NY. Could anyone drop a few lines on it?

use your school's career

use your school's career resources and network. i got a list of local firm contacts, sent out 15 emails, got 2 in return, and ended up getting a part-time job. good luck.

You might have some friends

You might have some friends who may know people so I'd talk with them. You can also use Monster and Craigs List as well.

Many thanks for your practical approach. I'll definitely try it. Do you think it is too late for second semester internship if I send out email by December?

Thanks a lot too. I'll try, but I don't have too much network in hedge fund yet. I may try Monster and Craigslist.

try cold calling and bloomberg

the more people you speak with, the better your chances. you gotta go direct and make your case. start cold calling and even if they say no, ask if they can refer you to somebody else. some hedge funds are under significant redemption problems this year, so don't take offense if you get a negative reaction or none at all. if you really want it bad, you should have some idea of why this is the case. also make the case quickly that you are offering your skill set for free and beyond that what kind of value you can bring to the table.

i know one guy who called a hedge fund founder everyday for 6 months, telling him that he would make him a buck in P/L within the first month of joining. he was already on the sell-side so knew the business, but made a good impression. i also know another hedge fund founder who got his first job with no relevant experience in a hedge fund as an assistant to the PM. he cold called the guy (or maybe knew him through a friend) and offered to work for free for 6 months. it worked and he later became the PM before founding his own firm.

good luck and give us an update later on how it goes.
