Opinions needed on Northwestern and being international
I am going to be an international transfer to Northwestern University this coming Fall semester. I'll be majoring in Econ and will also try to get into the Kellogg Certificate Program.
I won't be receiving any aid so I'll be six figures in the red upon graduation. This doesn't worry me so long as I'm able to secure something decent in the US once I've graduated. I would really appreciate the advice of the more senior/experienced members on here, especially those who would have some knowledge about the immigrant process here.
My situation:
I have experience at several BBs in my home country, but they have not been client facing and therefore the exposure has been quite limiting in that regard. I also have experience working in other lesser known organizations and foundations.
Ultimately, I'd like to break into S&T/Banking or Consulting in the US.
I would appreciate the advice of the internationals on this board who have gone through the process (secured jobs, got through the visa process) as I know the market condition as well as the immigration policies in the US right now aren't that favorable.
How difficult is it to work after graduation?
Do I need to major in something more quantitative to fulfill visa requirements ie. Maths/Sciences (I don't have any interest in pursuing this unless I must)?
How do I get internships? How easy is it to work during the summer?
Needless to say, once I arrive at Northwestern I'm going to work my tail off and attain the highest GPA possible and jump for as many extracurriculars as possible.
it's now very tough to get a job in the u.s. as an international. i have a couple of friends who are having serious issues with work visas and the like.
i think a lot of jobs posted last year specifically required the applicant to be a permanent resident or citizen in the u.s.
you may have to apply abroad
Well, it is hard but definitely not impossible..you have to strive the extra hard to get a job..but I am a case in point...came from a non target, got into ibanking..did for 6 months..and then switched to consulting due to the market conditions...and now I got my H1b...so it def can be done..but be prepared to work extra hard for it..and network your way up.
