Premeir World Cup Players Dropping like Flies

Well folks, I couldn't be happier I decided not to bet on the Ivory Coast's ~30:1 odds to win the World Cup the other day. With the likes of both Toure's, Kalou & of course Drogba, they appeared to have a solid chance to make a splash. That took a major beating today with the announcement that Drogba will likely miss what would likely to have been his last World Cup due to a broken arm.

Separately, England's central back and captain Rio Ferdinand injured his knee in practice, and will miss the World Cup.

Not good for one team that was likely the most talented African squad in a World Cup, and the other that was perhaps one of the most talented English squads in recent Cups, both potential contenders.

Good news for the USA & Portugal, though you never like to see this happen.

Thoughts?

creditderivativesYou think they'll let you watch the games during FT training over there on Madison?

Thankfully since we start July 8th, it doesn't interfere with any of the games. Tho last year I was watching confederations cup on the floor, which was fun. Couldn't help but be in awe once Brazil decided to play in the second half... it was like "oh wait, let's actually try" haha.

Realistically speaking, Rio out doesn't hurt England's chances at all (okay, maybe slightly). He hasn't played much this year for United, wasn't fit, and was way out of form. King (also has injury problems, but in form) and Dawson ( great player this year for Spurs though inexperienced) should be just as good if not better for England. As long as they don't pair Terry with Carragher (two slow central defenders is never good in the WC) England should be fine.

that's the second kick in the balls photo in today's posts...(EDIT: third)

btw that reminds me of chappelle's rick james episode when charlie murphy kicks rj and he flies into a mirror. obviously this guys not jumping cause he was hit by a kick so hard that it actually lifted him off the ground. but what if.

Cornrow -------------Best regards P.S. ppprrrrr

I think the bigger problem is on-field leadership, it might have to be Terry, we'll see if the defenders follow.

If the highest paid football players in the world need Rio Ferdinand to motivate and lead them on the pitch, then they have bigger issues than injuries to deal with.

I'm pretty sure that King and Terry played together in either Euro 04 or WC 06 though I'm not sure. I've always thought centre back meshing wasn't as important as the wingers and the full backs (especially in England's system where both Johnson and Cole love to go forward). What's interesting to me (being British and an England supporter) is how some of the younger players will play. Seeing Upson and Dawson in the group stages could be a huge boost to future tournaments.
