Preparing to recruit for IB is beneficial even if you don't make it in
I know there are many monkeys on here that spend hours perfecting their resumes, learning technicals, and networking, yet they still don't make it in. I will be approaching FT recruiting next year and regardless of whether or not I get a job in IB, I have realized my resume and interview skills have drastically improved. I had a few interviews for some non-IB internships in RE brokerage, f500, financial analyst, and a few others, and they were all very impressed with my resume and interview conversations. One HR staff even walked with me outside of the building to tell me I basically had the position and all of the guys liked me.
Prior to looking into IB, my resume was easily a D-, though at the time I thought it was pretty good, but now it is at least an A- and I am still working on it. Now that I have been exposed to WSO and the resume forum, I've noticed most people who apply to non-IB/consulting jobs have bad resumes. VERY BAD. I know a few of my friends applied to the same position as me and they had 3.7+, but I only had a 3.2, yet I got the best feedback and an offer from the interviewers because we were able to easily talk. Also, learning the IB technicals (I came from a non-finance background) has been useful for my non-ib interviews requiring case studies. Most of the time I am able to apply some of the terminology and principles, which impresses all of the interviewers.
IB networking has also tremendously improved my interviewing skills. I am a little introverted, but interviewers can't even tell because I have had so much practice asking questions and carrying on conversations with other professionals via networking.
TL;DR Even if you don't make it into IB, other industries will still consider you a top candidate.
*end positive rant*
Thanks. Never thought of it like that.
Would +1SB if I could
+1, great post. Have to agree, shooting for the top and preparing to go up against the best of the best will undoubtedly improve your chances at getting an offer at any place in the industry.
This is very true. All the guys with finance aspirations all seem to have the best grasp on the internship/interview situation.
Good read with a different perspective.
