quality of life - investment banking vs. pe
Hey all,
I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of how the quality of life at a PE firm compares to that at an investment bank. I'm talking about the analyst and associate level. Hours, weekends, pay?
Thanks.
It depends on the PE but the majority of them are not like TPG and instead only work you 8 until 8. That is a 60 hour week with very rare weekend work.
I can not wait.
Depends on the firms - do your research - but 8 to 8 sounds about right.
Would you say hours are generally better at a smaller PE firm? Fewer weekends?
If anyone out there has made the transition from banking to PE, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Thanks.
hours are definetly better at smaller PE shops. only the KKR's, TPG's, Blackstones have banker hours.
agree with the last post. sometimes you'll get swamped, but most of the time it's much better.
I worked in Merchant banking at a BB and generally the hours were 8 to 8, maybe 10 if there is a lot to do. Never more than a 70 hour week, and they PRODUCED a lot for the bank.
Larger funds look at more deals. More deals equal more hours, it's that simple.
You have to watch out for the bucket shops - they will burn you fast - larger = more stability, more work. Stick with larger if you have a family - smaller if you want to try to strike it rich, but are willing to sell your soul
Just make sure that the larger fund you are looking at has actually gone ahead and hired more people to keep pace with the changing environment. Many have not, which means you will get killed there too (though you will be at the top of the game anyway, so if that is your thing it doesn't matter)...
Not sure that will matter. Do not know of a single larger shop where your life is "great" compared to a BB
What's their pay range?
i agree. i know people at KKR, Blackstone, THL, TPG, etc. and they all get raked over the coals...
the way it is always described to me is - they work about 90% as hard as they did their first year in banking at GS.

What are the hours like in PE compared to IBD? Are hours in PE better at a PE firm than at a BB.
