Questions from a HS student
Hello,
I'm currently a Junior in High School in Germany, who's thinking about pursuing a career in finance, more specific IB. I did some research and found out that it would be best for me to set my goal on an analyst position at a BB in London, but I got some questions. First of all I looked at some universities and of course the top targets for London are LSE, Oxford and Cambridge. In Germany WHU, EBS, and FFM are considered target schools for IB. Last week I was in Vallendar attending a WHU Programm for HS students. Before I went there I wasn't even considering going there, I had my goal set on England and St. Gallen, but I just loved it there. The campus and student spirit are awesome and I think the quiet village would really help keeping me on track in terms of grades. So now my question is, how much harder is it to break into IB at a BB in London after attending a school like WHU in Germany compared to schools like LSE. I talked to some of the students and a lot of them got internships at banks like GS, MS or JPM, but most of them in Frankfurt. One of my other questions is, how hard is it to transfer from London to NY? In the long term I want to end up in NY, but for College I still want to stay in Europe. If it would be impossible to transfer within the first 3-5 years, I would maybe rethink that.
Thank you for your answers

I'm from the US - got accepted to FFM but chose a different school in Europe because I couldn't find much info on FFM at the time. Had to kick myself after German classmates told me how great of a school it was. But either way, I "made it" and I had classmates make it at some decent banks in London as well. Your first goal should be to make it into a decent school, get great grades, and try to do some extra curriculars (be involved). Take relevant internships, if you can, even if they don't pay. Worry about the rest later, but that's the basic foundation. It's tough to get into investment banking, and bulge-bracket banks should be your target but you should cast a wide net to include smaller firms as well.
Viel Glück! Wenn du andere Fragen hast, werde ich dir gerne helfen.
In Germany, the relevant internships usually pay quite well. The "classic" relevant internships would be Big 4 Audit --> Big 4 TAS --> IB. Depending on the school and other experience, Big 4 Audit can be skipped I guess. Also, of course TAS does not guarantee interviews with BBs/EBs, but it's a good foundation
The best target in the German speaking world is St. Gallen. It's one of the only schools in Europe where banks from London go during recruiting season and conduct ocr. WHU is defnitely a target in Germany and there are people from there getting jobs in London as well. I know people from both schools in London and as far as I know WHU pushes you to do an internship every year.
