Rec Letters
Wanted to get people's thought on this...
I was thinking to get a rec letter from my manager at my last post, but he was let go three months ago. Would it make sense to get a rec from him regardless?
My other choice is to have two recs from my current company, not sure how adcom will look at that?
why not get the letter from ur former manager? ppl move on for whatever reason. thats just what happens. its more important in my opinion that you choose someone who will write you a truly excellent and glowing reference rather than just some standard rec letter stuff.
Thanks Mezz.... I'll check with my former manager about that. With that said, supervisors at my current spot have stated many times that they'll stick their necks out for me, while my former manager is pre-occupied trying to land a spot on his own.
With that said, I think my current supervisors have the capacity to write better rec letters at this point. Just wanted to know how good/bad it is to have rec letters from the same firm.
At what level do we need letters of recommendations? If I am a rising Junior looking to get a SA position next summer and I have a 10 week BB SA position this year, should I get a rec from a manager or co-worker(VP level +)?
I believe most apps ask that at least one rec comes from your direct manager... not sure about the other one but it should probably come from someone how has the capacity to evaluate you.
Get your recommendation from the person that can best speak to the specific nature of your work. If you've done a good job, they'll speak well of you. As others have mentioned, you shouldn't worry that the manager moved on. Granted, more senior people that have received MBA's from top schools might carry more weight in their recommendations; however, in most cases, if you're debating between picking between a VP that knows you really well and a principal that knows you through your encounters once or twice a month, definitely have the VP write your recommendation.
okay this is good... but can someone just answer the question whether it looks bad to have both recs coming from the people in same company?
what about someone you work with.... not a boss... but a senior to you.... i worked as a junior trader for someone for two years.. he knows me better then anyone yet is an assoicate by title...
how are recos viewed from VP's that are relatives that you never worked for or with?
monty09, recommendations that ask for a direct manager/supervisor normally want to have at least some level of seniority separating you, because admissions committees think that the difference in seniority makes the person more equipped to gauge your leadership potential. so, if he's an associate but you were a junior analyst or whatever at the time, that should be fine. he'll have to identify his work relationship with you both in filling out the "check the box" responses and also write about that relationship when filling out the recommendation...most business schools have a specific question where they ask in what capacity the person knows you and how frequently you interacted.
bsa-bsps, that's a funny question. i'll just assume you were being a wiseguy because your question is so silly i had to laugh.
numi...yea i thought they would be awesome too
