Recommendations for time off
Graduating from undergrad in December of this year and will be starting full-time work at a MM IB next July as an analyst. I am going to have the first half of the year off and wanted to get some advice/recommendations on what you guys think I should be doing. I am currently finishing an internship at a boutique investment bank and have interned at a BB sized private equity real estate fund as well as two hedge funds. My main goal would be to exit 2-3 years from analyst gig and land a research analyst position at a event-driven fund.
I definitely will be studying for the GMAT starting in January and will be taking the test by end of March/early April. This will most likely account for 3 hours of my day.
Some things that I have thought about include:
-Working part-time to get some income (no income at all besides parents) -Take off for a month or so for a Euro trip -Join some kind of group/org/npo and assume a executive role -Interning at a hedge fund / investment bank
I appreciate your advice.
I'm in the exact same situation as far as the December graduation and starting in July.
My plan is GMAT studying for sure, landing a stupid ass part time job for like ~20hrs a week just for some money, and trying to fuck everything that moves.
I suggest you do the same.
Work construction or some form of manual labor...its a worthwhile experience
What makes you think you can do this?
Have connections, and can easily network my way into a internship at a hedge fund or another investment bank, knowing that I have interned at each in the city I live in.
As far as npo, I am currently the Treasurer for a medium sized non-profit for a specific chapter.
go be a ski bum
I strongly agree with this.
try not to wear socks or wake up before 10 am.. trust me your thank me later
cfa? hedge funds seem to value the designation as far as i know
Travel if you have the money. You will never have the opp to take a couple months off again until you retire
carnival in brazil then do that euro trip. pick up a hobby after gmat, maybe muay thai
do the npo stuff (actually add some value to the world, ancillary benefit of rounding out a potential b-school app down the line) and take up a crazy hobby like krav maga or capoeira
dude just chill and enjoy your freedom. possibly study for the gmat.
if I was you I'd do a trip abroad, backpacking or skibumming or something. Go have fun. You have the rest of your life to study and work. Now is the time for you to enjoy. Believe me, you will kick yourself if you do not take advantage of this time. You may never have free time like this for the next 30-40 years of your life. Do not waste this opportunity IMO.
hang out and enjoy your freedom. take your eurotrip imo.
if you never did a semester abroad....you NEED to take this time to go abroad...all of it. take some language classes to keep you grounded, then travel all over. it's truly an amazing experience...that is, unless, you want to work construction.
