relocation reimbursements--flying business/first?
I will be starting at an overseas office of MBB in October, and they have given me 7.5k to blow on relocation. I haven't received the specifics yet, but a guy can dream, right? I don't have a lot of stuff to send over--a few suitcases worth of clothes... so if I were to book a first class flight, would they really, really think I was just a dick? how about business? or am I still relegated to third-class citizenship?
Make sure that the 7.5K is not counted as taxable income. If it is, you will get a reimbursement minus the withholding.
7.5k is not a lot of money for a relocation. When I moved out west from toronto, I blew about $10 grand for moving my stuff, a temporary apartment, food/living expenses for 4 months. the move itself can be pretty pricey as some companies charge by weight or by number of pieces. i can only imagine it would be more expense overseas. Id suggest budgetting it out before you spend the dough on a first class ticket.
Do they even ask you how you spent it? My company just gives me the money and never asks how it was spent. I plan on moving my self in a uhaul and using the money for new furniture.
phdconsultant asks a good question. Some places give you a relocation/housing "bonus," which is just a check that you can spend however you want; others will reimburse you only for what you actually spend. If it's just a check, try not to blow every penny; if it's a reimbursement, I imagine they'd be fine with you flying first class since it's an overseas flight.
yup, turns out it's a bonus, not reimbursement. so while it means "no questions asked" and i'm free to do whatever, i think that i might just like to pocket the difference.
