Salary/bonus

Hey guys,

I have an offer at a top BB in Debt Capital Markets, and I'd like to find out what the bonus numbers for last year were. I've read both that bonus numbers are the same as IB and that they are significantly less, so I don't know what to believe.

So have any of you guys called up people you talked to in the group and asked directly about bonus numbers? It seems like this is kind of rude since you're asking about salary, but how else are you supposed to find out? Are bonuses by group posted anywhere?

I ask because I'm trying to decide between a consulting offer with the same base and relocation, and obviously the bonuses will be significantly different.

Thanks.

I too was curious when I received my offer, but I didn't want to be rude asking about the bonus directly. I had another offer on the table from a consulting firm, so I just called up my recruiter at the ibank and told him I was trying to compare the salaries with the cost of living in DC (where the consulting job was) and NYC. I told him about what the other offer was around and he then walked me through most of the numbers for the groups at the ibank.

It's not rude and it's no big deal. If you alread have the offer, it's not a problem - you'll find that bankers are very forthcoming about the money they make because that transparency is the only way they can decide whether they're getting screwed by their respective banks.
