Sales in sales and trading
I read that salesmen and traders are completely two different things yet training programs are listed as sales and trading as if they were the same thing. How do you get into sales and trading with the goal of being a salesman rather than a trader?
A career in sales doesn't require much formal education and experience when starting out, is this the same for a salesman in sales and trading working in wallstreet/finance?
What is equity sales and how is it different to other type of sale jobs?
What kind/type of sales do you do in sales and trading?
Thank you.
I have the same question. Is the sales side just the "institutional sales"? Which in that case I kind of understand the difference..
"sales" people sit across from the traders...so they literally stare at each other all day (with a row of computer monitors inbetween)...so sales are in the closest proximity to trading...and they talk back and forth all day long (about customers, about the market, sales asking traders t bid/offer securities...trader doing the bidding and offering...and also prop trading...but sales never sees the prop trading side).
So, this is why they call it "sales and trading"...it more because of the interaction, and proximity. But the 2 jobs are completely different. Also, its common for mediocre traders to become salespeople...and some of the best sales people can become traders (tho, that is more rare).
The background knowledge is similar...you need to know the same basic things....but in the weeds, the implementation of each job is different.
Thank you, I was just wondering what background knowledge do you need to know?
This is good. Could, you elaborate a little more? What exactly do sales people do in S&T? I've heard of institutional sales (long sales cycles, big clients), Wholesale, & retail (short cycles, selling MFs to wealth management companies. Are these the categories of a sales analyst in an S&T division? Is there anything else?
How to get into the Sales side of S&T? (Originally Posted: 08/01/2017)
Hi all,
Long time reader first time poster. Cheers for the laughs over the last year or so.
Looking for advice on how to get into the Sales side of sales & trading.
Background: -Studying Finance @Top-target school in Aus (UNSW) with avg. marks
-Interned at a fintech. investment fund(focus on the proprietary investment platform+asset selection for investors). Original internship was for 3 months - stayed on for a year as an analyst working 4 days a week whilst studying full-time, as the team (many ex. bankers) relied on me so heavily.
-Made a huge deviation & am currently interning in Enterprise Software Sales (Oracle, Salesforce, SAP etc.) and have dealt with a personal list of $500m+ revenue companies for some aspects of their tech-environment.
-All of the usual sporting ecs. + some charity work
-Reasonably well connected in Sydney due to family etc but links to IBs are tenuous.
May be a long-shot, but looking to find a way to leverage this experience and land a gig in Sales at an IB somewhere along the line.
Cheers,
J

Breaking into the "Sales" Portion of S&T? (Originally Posted: 08/12/2016)
I am very interested in sales. I consider myself very extroverted. I'd prefer to be in the sales position rather than the trader/trader-sales position.
How do I go about breaking in? Also, does institutional equity sales = institutional sales?
If you like sales take a look at Oracle and other similar companies unless you want to stay in finance.
Quite a few reports of the top sales talent making 7 figures.
