Sign date vs. Move in Date for Apartments

How much time do people usually leave between sign date and move in date for apartments? My hometown is pretty far away from NYC, so ideally I would make all my appointments ahead of time, take a day to look at all of them, select one by the end of the day, and move in as soon as possible. Can this be done?

Well

it is theoretically possible IF you have all the documentation ready. Most landlords require 40x the rent (or if you have a guarantor, 80x), bank statement, letter of employment, and verification of income (letter or in the form of pay stubs).

In my new apartment, i signed at the beginning of march for an april 1st move in date. I've also had friends who signed two weeks before they moved in.

There are definitely some places that get desperate if they can't rent out their places in the 1st week of the month, since most rentals are structured so that the tenant pays on the first of each month. If you find one of those with an "ASAP" move in date, you will be in luck. If you are working with a broker, you can definitely request XYZ move-in date..but a lot of those are set by the landlords since there are last minute things *they* need to take care of (painting, cleaning, installing new appliances, whtever).
