So, full-timers, what's your living situation like now?

So, I just got done searching for an apt and I got a studio in upper east-side for 1700 a month (430 sq ft). I couldn't find anything for less than 1550 even with a broker. Am I paying too much or is this reasonable?

$1700 a month is a little high for Upper East-side. I'm paying the same for Midtown East without a fee. Are you paying a broker fee on top of the 1700, what's the perecentage ?

86th is prime. right by the 4,5,6. they dont know what theyre talking about. 1700 is a bit much considering how far up it is, but the proximity to the train and park etc is great. UES bars are fucking lame though. Dorrians is ok... I guess.

i've been looking for three weeks. good luck. tried avoiding broker but it's so hard to because the no fee places jacked up their prices so high, and most doormen these days won't tell you about open shit. 1bd (flex 2) will run 2900-3500. You can get no fee for 3400 or so in the new buildings in Chelsea and Midtown West. I went with a 3000/mo jumbo (989 sq ft.) 1 bdr convert in midtown east with 10.2% broker fee. If you got negotiating skills you should get your fee down near 10%.

Wobbiest:
Why is everyone so set on living by themselves in an apt they will never see anyway? Craigslist under shared apts. Save the money IMO.

Wobbiest makes a very valid point...

Also, you would be right next to Pappayas (sp?). 86th is ok. I used to go there when I was younger because they had a decent pool hall.

86th and what though? Which train do you need to take to get to work?

You're making the assumption that his salary is the only way he is paying for his rent. How do you know he doesn't have tens of thousands banked, or someone isn't subsidizing him?

yeah it's for two- hence convert. and it's huge- we might add a third. i'd never live alone. 1000 sq ft in a nice building in midtown east for 3k is sickkk. but the fuckers want a guarantor even though my buddy and i make the requirements. some "new job" bullshit.
