Sophomore SA Positions 2021 (Class of 2023)
Hello all,
I am currently a freshman (class of 2023) but I am struggling to find any substantial threads about firms offering positions to those between sophomore and junior years in 2021. Does anyone know companies that are going to be taking sophomores in 2021? I am a mathematical economics major at a liberal arts school, so the firms don't have to be BB lol. I am most interested in IB, but if you know of firms hiring for positions that are not IB, but PWM or other industries, I would be interested in that as well. I am asking now because I want to give myself as much time as possible to network to increase any chance I have of getting any position. I am NOT DIVERSITY, so keep that in mind as well. I am located near Chicago, so any Chicago-based companies would be great too.
Also, I understand not a lot of companies take sophomores, so I am not expecting to land some prestigious position.
those apps won't open until mid to late summer, at the very earliest. most internship programs for sophomore summer will open in the fall and through the winter. also, hard to land something at a BB/EB as a sophomore, especially non-diversity. look for smaller/regional banks that may have an internship program (several in Chicago that have internship programs). if you wanna be a step ahead, just start reaching out to ppl in the industry and network with everyone, whether they are in ib, pe, hf, consulting, tech, whatever (you may realize you like consulting more than ib for example, ya never know). you'll learn about the industries and be in a better spot than other kids. more networking = more opportunities. hope this helps.
Pretty sure Loop Capital takes sophomores. Might want to look into Mesirow Financial too, I know one guy who interned there soph year (albeit not IB) that later went into IB. Both based in chicago
Morgan Stanley opened their sophomore 2021 IB applications this last week, as well as their junior year apps. OP if you’re struggling to find an internship, a lot of freshmen find something kinda finance related. I’d absolutely recommend against it, but if you run out of options, northwestern mutual lets you sell insurance and people try to spin it into a PWM experience because the firm also does some kind of investing. They will take anyone that can breathe and essentially have you write down 200 of your closest friends + family members to sell insurance to
Unforunately MS doesn't offer any SAs at the Chicago office according to their website. Do you think it will set me back a lot to not have a finance-related job between freshman and sophomore year?
If you let it, then yeah. Honestly man, tons of internships are getting canceled because of COVID-19. I personally didn’t even know what an internship was for the longest time (I’m the only person to ever go to college in my family), so I started doing internships the fall of my sophomore year. If you get great grades, go to a semi-decent school, and network well, then it won’t matter that you didn’t get a freshman summer internship. Work on learning the skills, start looking to do finance related stuff during the school year, and keep your grades up
you can network into BB/EB non-diversity, buddy of mine is actually diverse but got into expedited process at a BB through connections with MD at an office that usually takes 0 interns
Edit: 0 sophomore interns lol
bump because i can
