Summary of Market Risk Analyst?
I'm preparing for a interview in which I present various careers in the finance industry and such. I was hoping that WSO could help me aggregate some of the information here.
I have to present a ‘Market Risk Analyst’ employed at an ‘investment bank’. I understand basically what a market risk analyst does, but there are a few more details that I'm unsure of.
a) Typical Academic experience, technical expertise and qualifications;
b) Typical Career Path, Aspirations and Earning Potential;
c) How this function contributes and delivers value to the employer.
I will also be looking online for more information, but any responses (including helpful websites) will be appreciated! Thanks in advance!
(Others that I need to present include: ‘Options Trader’ employed at a ‘Hedge Fund’ & ‘Product Engineer’ employed at an ‘eCommerce tech start-up’)
this may help https://www.quantnet.com/threads/a-day-in-the-life-of-a-market-risk-ana…
Thanks! I'll search around QuantNet as well!

What does it mean when someone says they are a VP, MD in Market Risk Oversight or Market Risk Management? I don't have any job specific details other they work with a lot of traders. Does this seem like a BO/MO or FO position? Has anybody come across this title?
Risk is MO. It's critical, but its MO.
Is that all types of risk? I can see operation risk as being BO/MO but what about credit risk type roles? Are there any roles on the trading floor that can qualify as FO besides the actual trading roles?
They are MO because they do not actually generate revenue, but they are absolutely critical and just because technically its MO it does not mean that its boring or mundane work. Basically with all these different trading desks looking out for themselves, someone has to act as an oversight and make sure the floor is working as a whole.
I see, thanks for the info. What would be the pay scale for these types of roles? Are they tied to revenue or similar to a support function?
Saw this on another recent thread:

How is a Market Risk analyst role at a BB? The base is almost the same as Front office analysts. How are the bonuses?
Also, what are the chances to move into a trading/structuring position?
Bonuses are lower. This a cost center, not a profit center, so the upside is generally limited. That said there is less volatility in the numbers (that I am familiear with) than front office. '
It is middle office so lots of interacting with traders and desk heads, moving to a trading role is not unheard of and is probably one of the better MO functions to do so. You understand risk and market forces more so than a typical finance or product control role. That said, it's still MO with all the pitfalls that come with it.
I've worked closely with a market risk group at a BB and I second Boothorbust's comment. You will mostly be analyzing risk metrics (VaR, Greeks, etc depending on your coverage area) monitoring trade exposures. I know 2 people personally that moved into an origination/structuring role for structured products from here and indirectly 1 person that moved to oil trading.
Was the market risk group you worked with market risk business management? I was told that there were several groups within market risk (e.g., quants, developers, business management, reporting, ops, etc.). Not sure which "group" runs through the greeks and generate risk reports.
Thanks!

Hi Guys, I just completed my MBA from a Ivy league school in India and i got an offer for market risk analyst in a BB. I have already read all the posts relating to market risk and I am now well aware of the opportunities that exist to move to FO from this role.
But after 2-5 yrs into this role, wat r the career opportunities that exist for this role (outside IB) esp. in the consulting field . Is it possible at all to move to other fields?
