Take the money??
Here is my question. Suppose I had an opportunity at a middle market ($300 to $500 mm)Private Equity shop in a non traditional financial market (think Indianapolis type market). After 3 years as a BB analyst I am looking to get into PE. Due to the location this firm is willing to pay top level $$ in order to attract analysts from larger markets. Should I take the $$ (Base + Bonus + Carry) in the smaller market, knowing that there may not be any other opportunities in the local market if I leave at two years?
Given the fact that most of the other "traditional financial markets" typically have high living expenses, you could probably be living as a superstar in Indianapolis vs. NYC or LA
Depends on what your future career goals are--if you want to eventually end up at a top-tier shop in NY, then maybe take less money and continue to work in NY. If the end game is just money and you're fine with living in the midwest, then take the money and start making it rain. Money justifies all decisions in that case (and I suppose it should).
