What is the career path for performance analyst?

I am currently a portfolio management intern at a top insurance company. My manager told me that due to the market downturn, they probably wouldn't be hiring in the research/portfolio management area in the near future but may be able to offer me a full time position as a performance analyst. I was wondering what the career path is like for performance analysts and how hard is it to go from performance to the investment area.

Thanks!

First, please clarify. What is a performance analyst? What is your functional role? Is it financial reporting? Is it risk analysis?

Remember, position titles don't translate across industries. Always puts things in the perspective of your "functional" role.

PA = tracking how the insurance company's investments are doing vs. their benchmarks. This could be as broad as looking to their equity positions vs. S&P 500 all the way to what the average duration in their core portfolio compares against the Merrill Corporate Bond Index.

If you look at a company like Wilshire Associates, that's a huge part of what their analysts do (same basic skillset).
