When to Apply to Summer 2018 Consulting Internships

I am an incoming Junior and my goal would be to work at a Big 4 consulting firm (or somewhere else like PwC, KPMG, or Oliver Wyman) for my Summer 2018 internship. For most of these places, the applications are open on their website. When should I begin applying? Should I try to build more connections and network at these companies before I even apply? I know they don't start doing interviews until mid-September at my university.

If you aren't at a top 5ish school and you don't have very strong prior work experience you aren't going to get many, if any, bites 1L summer. Assuming you can get a consulting gig, and that's what you want to do then don't wait. Most 1Ls whether at Yale Law School or Thomas Cooley spend their summer with a judge.

P.S.: Most MBBs I know of are just about finished with recruiting for the summer associate class.
