Worried

I have an offer at a MM IB and I am scared shitless tbh. I would have a great opportunity to learn in my role but I am unsure if I am cut out for it. Were these feelings common amongst you all? Im ready to work and absorb knowledge but this IB role will be vastly different than what I do know (hours and responsibility). Any words of encouragement? I want to do well but the feeling of doubt about whether or not I can hack it has slowly crept in...

couchyjust do it and get fired if you suck at it. You can still say you did IB.

I'm going to paraphrase this a little bit...

I think what you're really stressing about is failing at the job because it is known to be grueling. Which is perfectly natural, type A folks who go into IB never wan to fail. To counteract these feelings, I would keep in mind that you were actually hired, so guys that have been in the business long enough to know what works and what doesn't think that you have what it takes to succeed. Otherwise you wouldn't have received an offer. Second, you should remind yourself that everyone fails, and it is the best learning tool available. So don't be scared of making little mistakes when you start out, just make damn sure you don't do them twice.

Did you fly over my helmet?

Everyone has a little angst before they start their first, real, job. Just give it your level best and whatever happens, you'll know you gave it a legitmate shot.

Good Luck.

A girl I sat next to in training felt the same way. Came from a lib arts background....didn't do too well on the material we were given during training (which was mainly B/S anyways)....thought she couldn't take hours / stress. A few months later, she became one of the top analysts in our class.

On the other hand, had a dude who thought he was god's gift to the world of IB. He didn't even last until the first bonus was paid out.

Yea man, you were good enough to be hired so unless you think you are Frank Abagnale I doubt you'll do all too horribly.

I'll also say that from comparing my friends at MM vs. BB, the 100-hour weeks seem to almost never happen at MM and those that I know in MM Banks get more like 70-85 hr weeks. Definitely have time to go out friday, maybe a little work saturday but nothing too grueling and time to go all out Saturday night.

Congrats on the offer buddy, kill it, be thankful for the opportunity and yes after your 2 year stint as an analyst, you'll have many options to pursue. Best of luck.
