Would you work for Uber?
Fellow Monkeys,
As the thread title says, would you go to work for Uber right now? Questions have been raised on their ability to justify a ridiculous valuation + potential to realize profits in the future, as well as provide liquidity to their investors. That being said, they are a huge global company and there are lots of cool problems to solve.
By way of context, I am currently in a second year analyst at a regional boutique (read: no name) IB on the west coast, mostly doing small tech deals (VC or Tech PE as well as a top MBA.
What are your thoughts?
I am almost in the same position, though I just started in IB in February. I was looking in linkedin the other day and saw a position for financial analyst at Uber in my city. It made me think if maybe I could apply. I know you already got the offer and I am only considering it but my thinking is the following:
-If I stay at my current firm, working ~70hr /week I can study for the CFA and then apply to the mba after 1.5-2 years work experience. -If I leave IB for Uber, I have no idea if even pursuing the CFA would be worth it but I think it would be easier to apply for a top MBA. -Currently I have a good time networking with funds and investors for the IB deals, and I am getting more investment savvy -At Uber I would meet more entrepreneurial people (I assume), and get more strategy savvy
Conclusion: I will remain at IB because it just fits better with my career goals (Investment Industry) and will use the MBA to get more strategy knowledge which comes in handy in IB.
Good rationale. I think for you since CFA is important, it makes sense to stay in IB and develop some really hard technical skills and potentially keep the HF door open.
My thinking is that Uber will differentiate me for MBA apps instead of having the vanilla 2+2 background. Additionally, for my end goal of VC/PE having some operational chops is very important (esp. for VC) and earning those at Uber will be huge in terms of experience and brand.
Lastly, Uber employs some of the smartest people in tech; both product wise and business wise. These are the people who will go on to start their own companies, angel funds or jump to VC. Developing this network will definitely help and open some doors.
Still haven't made a decision yet, but i'm leaning Uber for now.
Grab the role. If your goal is top MBA, corp strat at Uber would look great, especially given your non-brand name IB (in your words). Don't worry about business model as a whole, company will still be there in next few years, its a tech darling and you'll gain a great skillset regardless, plus great stories/experience if it actually does start to sputter.
Top MBA admissions is all about work experience, brand name on resume, and future employability. Your current role isn't well-known, so this is a great stepping stone for any of your future goals.
I'd take it if I were you
