Networking outside your group
Hello all,
I am graduating in May and starting in Big4 Audit. However, I would like to transfer out of Audit in 1/2 years in move into Financial Advisory/Transaction Advisory Services. My career goal, as of now, is to get MBA and then move into PE/Consulting.
I interned in Audit last summer and found it really hard to network with people from other group like FAS/TAS, Consulting or Corporate Finance. I assume it will be same when I start my full time.
I was wondering in what way I can approach people in other group so that I can learn more about their work and possibly help move into their group. The only thing I can think is to try to get to know someone through company's IM or social website or find some alumni or friends of friends who work in other departments.
Please feel free to share any other tips or helpful suggestions.
Thanks!
The Big 4 have internal directories that you can use to easily identify who is in the service line in your office. Unfortunately, reaching out to them is pretty much like reaching out to someone in another company. For the most part, you will just need to send a random email asking if you could meet for lunch. Frame it as cross-line-of-service networking, and people will be more likely to say yes to you than to a random stranger. Additionally, I would get involved in as extracurricular charity-type events as you can. Unless someone from a service line is assisting you with part of the audit (e.g. the valuation group is helping you test goodwill), this is typically the only time people from different groups interact with each other.
You are much less likely to get to transfer from networking than you are from achieving a top performance rating. If you have someone on the other side who will vouch for you, it will certainly help, but your focus should be on getting a top performance rating, with the networking being a secondary objective.
Thanks for the post 808.
And yes, I have heard a lot that you should be a top performer to have any chances of transferring. I was wondering if you (or anyone else) know what factors are taken into evaluation when measuring performances apart from having right attitude, working hard, being a team player and such. I think I read somewhere that being involved in recruiting and such also helps in evaluation. Anyone can vouch for that?
