Possible to go from journalism to AM?

I am a journalist at a publication for institutional investors/allocators (think II Mag or P&I, etc) covering all sorts of asset classes and industry news.

is it possible to move from something like this to an entry level buy side role? It is not a technical role by any means, but I’m always talking to fund managers, consultants, CIOs everyday and have developed a good number of relationships with these types of people.

I don’t really want to wait another 3-4 years to get work experience and then go to B-school again and I know I’m not going to be a reporter forever.

I have had some success getting sell side ER interviews with this background, but want to know if AM or something similar is out of the question.

I've seen this happen on both the sell side and buy side with candidates usually from industry trade publications or specialist news sources (e.g. Debtwire). Have seen some without needing to get an MBA prior to this transition as well.

Yes, it's possible. There are times on wall street when there's no jobs, and there's been times when people you'd never think would make the cut get drafted off the street. Try to identify a friendly firm that is doing well and growing. Ask a contact there to get coffee for advice about your career and see where it goes. It's not the worst market, but it's not the best. There's a lot of people with experience trying to find a gig, or a better gig. But there are areas where stuff is happening.
