Neuberger Berman - Junior Portfolio Manager thoughts?

Hi all,

I'm a trader at a reputable prop firm in Europe. My goal has always been to move into the portfolio management realm, and I was hoping somebody could shed some light on the position/compensation/exit ops of NB.

Thanks

I bought Neuberger Berman 13 years ago.

The answer to your question depends immensely on which team you are joining. One thing I can tell you is that people don't leave voluntarily because the pay is too good in portfolio management roles.

PM me if you don't want to provide your information publicly. If it's a team that was started post bankruptcy, I won't have any insight.

Good luck.

Very team specific, but the reputation of the firm seems to have gone down post financial crisis. Multiple people I've spoken to said pay is below street level.

Team would be European Inv. Grade Credit. It appears that some of the FI products have posted subpar numbers, which may have damaged the reputation slightly. Besides salary, any other insights?

It's still a great money manager/PM role at the end of the day. These positions aren't easy to come by. Not familiar with that specific group, but was also told the firm can be a little political at times, but that's the same with a lot of PM groups. Again, very specific to your group. Your gut feeling should tell you if the group sounds fine.

I'm hearing similar things from my own network, so thanks for confirming.

I'm more concerned with where the Jnr. PM would sit (FO/BO), and progression opportunities. I recently posted a sample of the role specification in another post (Front/Middle/Back office). Could you give an evaluation on whether it is genuinely a 'PM' style position, or mid-office?

Thanks

sounds middle/front office. If there's are co-managers of the fund that is a good sign. Some funds have you do this type of role for say 5-7 years or so before moving you up to co-manager and eventually lead PM.
