Accenture Strategy Analyst viability for Top MBA or MBB down the road?
I am considering an offer from Accenture Strategy as an Analyst and am deciding if it's worth accepting or to continue looking at other consulting options.
While I would be in the Accenture Strategy division, it looks like a lot of my work would be focused around "Enterprise Performance Management" and consulting using financial reporting software like Hyperion. I don't want to get pigeon-holed in the tech realm and was wondering if this could be good experience for B school and ideally transitioning to a MBB down the road.
Any advice or personal stories would be much appreciated, thanks!
You need to provide us with the alternative if you don't take his offer.
Accenture strategy could get you to an M7/T15ish depending on the rest of your profile, all of which are at least decent for MBB recruiting. Your story, "I wanted to shift the focus of my work away from tech" would work well for recruiting and MBA apps.
Some alternative consulting firms that I have been interviewing at are boutiques working with executive compensation, FinTech for the most part. They don't hold as much prestige to their name but I am really looking at trying to build my story for pre B School and I thought their unique focus could bring something new to the standard consulting application.
Also to add, I have some connections in non profit education where I plan to do some pro bono work for over the next few years to improve my application chances, not sure if that factors in much but figured it might be worth mentioning.
I would definitely stay away from exec comp. Fintech could be a bit more interesting depending on the type of work, but for b school apps you are going to want a brand name more often than not and Accenture Strategy is solid enough.
Accenture Strategy will safely get you into programs outside of MBA business schools ">M7 but still in the top 15. Depending on your application execution and your demographic background, you might get bites at "lower" MBA business schools ">M7 schools as well. H/S/W, however, will be very difficult unless you move from Accenture to industry or a "better" consulting firm before applying. Source: worked at Accenture and later got an MBA.
Why do you want to go to business school? Business school is a means to an end, not an end in and of itself.
Thank you for giving some insight on your background I really appreciate it!
I am coming from a top 100 undergrad that is non target and am looking at B school as a potential to rebrand myself as a viable candidate for top tier strategy consulting firm. I had an internship in MC at a boutique, and while I didn't feel a great fit due to a recent acquisition within the firm, I really enjoyed the work we did and the diversity of clients and problems that the consulting field offered.
Also, in terms of application chances, I have some connections in non profit education where I plan to do some pro bono work for over the next few years to improve my application chances, not sure if that factors in much but figured it might be worth mentioning.
Why do you think you will be doing "Enterprise Performance Management" and using financial reporting software like Hyperion? I'm pretty certain that all analysts for Accenture Strategy come in as part of the analyst development program and thus, can work on any strategy engagement. However, what you are describing sounds like internal, non-client facing account financial management which definitely isn't Accenture Strategy. Also, last I heard Accenture Strategy only hired from a small handful of campuses which are typically top 20ish school.
I'm not trying to crap on your offer - I just want to make sure that your opportunity is indeed what you think it is so that we can provide the best advice. As far as MBA prospects, as another poster mentioned - H/S/W will be difficult but assuming 700+ GMAT score and good GPA, Accenture Strategy should safely put you in a top 10/15 school with a good shot at M7. Full disclosure: ex-Accenture Strategy -> Top 5 MBA -> MBB and many of my peers had similar trajectories.
