Breaking into the public sector space at MBB and AT Kearney

I'm interested in national and international public sector projects within the economic development and government organizational change spaces. Example 1: working with the public-private partnerships in sub Saharan Africa to create an economic strategy to enhance workforce efficiency within the private sector, or to analyze how to better recruit FDI, or creating a business expansion platform for companies already within their borders. Example 2: performing infrastructure impact studies and initiatives in Asian countries, or assisting nations in Latin America with bureaucracy-reform policies.

I'm working in economic development and urban planning now, and I know that I want to take my econ and strategy experience to the next level within the next couple of years. I'm looking at getting a 2nd masters degree from a top school, but I don't know if MBB recruits non-MBAs like they do for their MBAs (i.e. target schools). I hear that experienced hires get a break with their educational pedigree, but I don't know if I can trust that. Should I not bother with an MPA or MPP unless its from a target school? I'm also looking at LSE in the future, as they seem well connected to MBB + AT Kearney in the UK for internships.

?Any suggestions for what steps to take next? My mugshot below....

  1. BA Political Science, Texas A&M, 2005, 3.0/GPA
  2. Master of City & Regional Planning, U of Texas at Arlington, 2012, 3.5/GPA
  3. Six years of economic development experience, with 4 years of that as a manager
  4. Three years of private sector experience in business development (before I switched over to this career)
  5. Great portfolio - My "crown jewel" is a large project that I'm currently spearheading to create thousands of direct jobs
  6. 34 years old

THANKS in advance!

Why're you only looking for MBB and ATK, especially in UK LEK, Strategy& and Oliver Wyman are strong as well.

Concerning your background I'm not sure whether a second master's will help you progress a lot. Your undergraduate and master GPAs are below on what MBB and other firms of the same caliber expect. Normally they're looking for grades beyond 3,5 in both bachelor and master. Nevertheless, you have an interesting background so I think you stand a good shot if you're getting an MBA or MPP/MPA (e.g. at Harvard Kennedy, Princeton, Columbia) - since you want to work in the public sector I would recommend you to follow the later one.
