Post MBA Consulting (and general) Employment Performance Verification and Reference Check

Going to a top ten B school this fall. I knew I was going to school and really just did nothing in terms of the non-stop admin crap at my current firm and got a below average performance rating for 2013. Been at the firm 4 years and each year before, I was on target or above average on all ratings.

Wondering for MBA internships and post MBA recruiting if this is a big issue? For top-tier MBB recruting or I Bankings (and all other job types in strategy or general management), will they just verify employer, titles, dates, and salary or do they scrutinize performance ratings as well?

I imagine in terms of reference checks, they'll just reach out to people I put down so that shouldn't be a concern right? or do they call most recent HR managers?

Thanks...regretting not just taking care of my shit, but past it now so wondering how it might shake it out if people in the know can shed some light.

This is a non-issue. No one's going to check on your performance ratings as part of their due diligence. At most they'll call HR to make sure you actually worked there, but HR won't release any additional information beyond dates of employment/title due to lawsuit worries.

Not an issue at all. They won't check your performance ratings. I've heard very occasionally about people being asked about their performance in interviews but there's no real way that interviewers can verify this (i.e., they cannot demand you show them your appraisal)

I previously worked for McKinsey in London and have started a blog about consulting and how to get into it at www.theconsultingcoach.com
