Re-apply at Mid East office?
Wasn't successful at previous attempt at one of the top MCs in the UK; graduate program, and thinking of re-applying at their office in Middle East. They have a separate application process, applying directly to office of interest, nothing to do with the UK recruitment. Is it worth it? Can they find out I wasn't successful in the UK and reject my application before they even interview me? I go to top target school in the UK.
Thanks.
Try it, worst think is getting dinged again, application usually is not that big of a hustle.
second that. No harm in trying - had it been through a contact then it would have been a no-no, otherwise you've got nothing to lose. all the best!
what does MC stand for? and which city are you aiming for?
Im pretty familiar with everything in the Middle east, im from Dubai.
There is a slight chance that they will know you already got rejected, the internal communications are very serious in the Middle east... so they will probably know.
Management Consulting.
good to know, thanks.
Yea they will definitely check in with the area your uni is in. Then after that, they will fish around for info about you, and if your names pops up in the system, your discarded.
You might even need to come clean or get the recruiters at the office you applied at shoot your a reco to the mideast office.
Thanks guys. The school is one of the so-called golden triangle ones. MCs recruit heavily here. I submitted my application online, but never got to be interviewed. As I said, its only a graduate program, so I was thinking that they wouldn't be bothered to run check ups if I re-apply with their Mid-East office, but I guess they might do. In this case, should I casually mention in my cover letter that I applied to the UK office, but didn't get to be interviewed, or not mention anything at all? Thanks
I would not mention it - you are applying to the Middle East...if and when you get an interview you can play it by ear. I would however think of a compelling reason why you are now applying to the Middle East and make sure that is in your CL
LOL @ Khara 3alekon whose username means "Shit on all of you" in Arabic.
LOL only me! thats what Oil Trading in Dubai does to you.
Knowing the Middle East, most firms will most likely not figure out, or even try to figure out, whether you have already applied to other offices. I disagree with the comment above "internal communications are very serious in the Middle East," it's actually the extreme opposite most of the time where back office functions (i.e. HR) are falling apart due to the localization laws and putting unqualified people in these positions (which they cannot be fired from either so there goes any ambition/motivation they had, if any).
However, some MC firms can easily find out through centralized HR functions i.e. BCG's middle east office(s) report to HR in Germany
Doesn't matter what country, region, etc.... always assume that you are being watched and researched, because if you take Riffs advice, you might set yourself up for a serious screw up.
Be alert and always proactive because in the ME your guard is your weapon of choice, your work is the 2nd addition.
btw, Riffs, this is MC not accounting. your obviously blind to how biz actually works in ME offices.
I currently work at an MBB (was in ME and have since transferred to Europe) - not quite sure why accounting is relevant. I do have previous Big 4 experience, but only in the advisory space.
I have lived in the Middle East for over 10 years so I'm hardly blind to how business or life is here, although most locals do live in denial of shortfalls in the region.
At the end of the day, there are advantages and disadvantages to every location. You mention the need to be 'proactive' but the region's dynamics are the extreme opposite. They ask for numerous qualifications, but most people are inexperienced and underqualified. This type of irony and hypocrisy is pretty typical in the ME.
An MBB firm will do likely do their research, but nepotism and laziness stil exist within plenty of their ME offices; I have witnessed it first hand. For the same reasons I generally strongly advise people from going to the region unless they're at the end of their careers and want to cash in, while enjoying a relaxed lifestyle.
haha, the "professional" Middle East (i work there)
Riffs ... you were in the Middle East for 10 years? That means one of two things: 1. you are either in your 30s now and I'm not sure what are you doing posting in this forum (you should be busy leading projects in MBB Europe) OR 2. you are in your 20's and you don't know how business is in the middle east because you were in the region in an international school while your parents where working and you had minimal interaction with locals (people and businesses)
Moreover, it is you who is in denial because you probably can only see life from you narrow and ignorant perspective ... we from the middle east fully understand the shortcomings of the region and yet despite that we are not willing to trade it for anything in the world.
.
^Agreed
yea this turned pretty hostile.
Anyways, for the original purpose of this post, just make sure your prepared for anything in general (globally). Its pretty easy for any international company to shoot around information about someone's applications across continents.
Please!! Don't blame someone for being "hostile" if you tell him that he is "living in denial".
